During the development of the 2017 conference scheduled for the University of Melbourne (Australia), the US association, the Society for the Social Studies of Science (4S) announced it was holding its conference in Sydney (Australia) in 2018. We decided that a lot of APSTSN members especially from SE Asia would find it too expensive to travel to Australia two years running. We therefore decided to cancel our 2017 biennial conference so the large 4S association would attract more attendees in the interests of STS ‘globalisation’; although being out of of sync with Australian University teaching semesters.
As another measure we advertised the 22-24 November 2017 conference of the Australasian Association for the History, Philosophy, and Social Studies of Science (University of Wollongong). It attracted 70 delegates and was by all accounts a successful, robust, and intimate conference with three parallel sessions over the three days; and presentations of the traditional 30 minutes in length, as the APSTSN conferences also follow.
